How to win the click with your main image
On Amazon, the main image is the whole ballgame. It is the one thing a shopper sees before they decide to click you or the competitor two rows down. Get it right and everything downstream — your A+ content, reviews, price — actually gets a chance to work. Get it wrong and none of it matters.
Here are the five things a scroll-stopping main image always gets right.
1. The product fills the frame
Thumbnails are tiny. If your product floats in a sea of white space, it disappears at search-results size. Fill roughly 85% of the frame so the product reads instantly, even on a phone.
2. One clear hero angle
Pick the single angle that communicates "what it is" fastest. Save the alternate angles, scale shots, and detail crops for images 2–7. The main image has one job: instant recognition.
3. Honest, bright lighting
Flat, even lighting on a true-white background isn't just Amazon policy — it builds trust. Muddy shadows and grey backgrounds read as "cheap" before a shopper can even name why.
Shoppers don't read the main image. They feel it in a fraction of a second — then they click, or they scroll.
4. Scale you can feel
The number-one post-purchase complaint is "smaller/bigger than I thought." You can't add a banana for scale on the main image, but you can choose a crop and angle that make the true size obvious. It cuts returns and bad reviews.
5. It beats the neighbours
Your image is never judged alone — it's judged against the 20 thumbnails around it. Before you finalize, screenshot the live search results for your keyword and drop your image in. If it doesn't jump out, it isn't done.
The quick checklist
- Product fills ~85% of the frame
- One clear, recognisable hero angle
- Bright, even lighting on pure white
- Crop communicates real size
- Stands out against the live search page
Nail these five and you've done the hard 80%. The remaining 20% — the polish that turns a good image into a category-leader — is exactly what we obsess over on every project.
